What does an Exercise to Music Instructor look like?

The Active IQ Certificate in Fitness Instruction (ETM) is at Level 2 on the Qualifications and Credit Framework. It also provides access onto The Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) at Level 2. This qualification is perfect for anyone wanting to teach Group Exercise Classes including Les Mills and Zumba. It is an online Exercise to Music qualification which means that you can study in your own time and in the comfort of your home or office. GXT fully support our students,our whole team including assessors and internal verifiers actively teach classes

  • Once booked you will receive confirmation of your course and a registration form
  • You then proceed directly to the Active IQ platform for online learning packed with interactive information and quiz sheets
  • You select an invigilator to oversee your exams
  • You complete your Learner Achievement Portfolio (LAP) for final submission including worksheets and lesson plans
  • You provide a DVD for your teaching assessment

ETM Qualification Aim & Objectives:

To become an Exercise to Music Instructor  there are no specific pre-requisite qualifications.

If you love attending group classes then this is the best experience. There is an element of discussing, presenting, reading and writing involved and learners should have basic skills in communication.

This is perfect for adults (aged 16+) wishing to pursue a career either in the health and fitness sector, community setting or in schools as ETM Instructors.

Please note that 16 to 18 year-olds may need to be supervised in the workplace, once they have achieved the qualification


  • Unit 1 - Anatomy & Physiology multiple choice exam
  • Unit 2 - Client Interview & Worksheet
  • Unit 3 - Worksheet
  • Unit 4 - Principles of Health & Fitness multiple choice exam
  • Unit 5 - Worksheet or Professional Discussion, PARQ, Activity Session Plan x 2
  • Unit 6 - Worksheet, Observed Summative Assessment, Session and Self Evaluation


Exercise to Music Course Qualification Structure:

This qualification comprises 6 units:

  • Unit 1 - Anatomy and physiology for exercise
  • Unit 2 - Know how to support clients who take part in exercise and physical activity
  • Unit 3 - Health, safety and welfare in a fitness environment
  • Unit 4 - Principles of exercise, fitness and health
  • Unit 5 - Planning group exercise to music sessions
  • Unit 6 - Instructing group exercise to music sessions

Successful achievement of all six units must be achieved for the full qualification

Group X recommend that anyone new to teaching works with one of our Mentors during your study. We are the only company to offer this inspirational local service which works fantastically well and provides an unstressed, personal touch: 

Your mentor will help you to make the hard transition into practical teaching.
This level of experience will be invaluable as it will provide a healthy transition from participant to instructor in a safe and appreciative environment.
Your mentor will help you in the following ways:

  • Invite you to attend up to 4 sessions
  • Provide you with progressive feedback
  • View your course work and offer help & advice
  • Allow to teach parts of their classes in order for you to gain experience
  • Invigilate your exams
  • Offer online or phone consultations once a week

Group X Training will provide you with a mentor for the additional fee of £150 paid directly to them. If you would like to nominate your own instructor as a mentor, please let us know.


Option for Instructors already qualified to Level 2 standard

GXT have made it so very simple and easy for previously qualified fitness instructors to upgrade to this qualification. Jayne Nicholls

What you need to do

  • Book your course to receive confirmation and instructions
  • Once registered you will study via the Active IQ online platform
  • Complete the last 2 units of your Learner Achievement Portfolio  (LAP)
  • Submit both LAP & Practical DVD for Assessment

You need to comlete the following units: 

  • Planning group exercise to music sessions
  • Instructing group exercise to music

You can complete the 2 specific ETM units in planning and instructing group exercise if you currently hold a level 2 qualification with the following units:

Mandatory Units

  • Unit 1 - Anatomy and physiology for exercise 
  • Unit 2 - Know how to support clients who take part in exercise and physical activity 
  • Unit 3 - Health, safety and welfare in a fitness environment 
  • Unit 4 - Principles of exercise, fitness and health 
You will need to submit a copy of your Level 2 certificate.

Your Assessment will include:

  • Completion of a Learner achievement portfolio including - Class Plan, Session Plans, Professional Worksheet
  • Practical Observation Evaluation presented via DVD
Completion for the 2 units will provide you with a certificate for these 2 units only which will work in conjunction with your current Level 2 Qualification.

If you would like the full Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instruction (ETM) this can be provided at a fee of £75.
